영어 입문/정관사

영어의 정관사(definite article)는 the이며 뒤에 오는 명사가 모음으로 시작 될 때에는 보통의 경우와 조금 다른 발음을 갖는다.

정관사의 용법은 부정관사와 달리 외국인들에게는 몹시 까다로우며 이를 올바로 쓰는 것은 그리 쉽지가 않다.

정관사 'the'는 셀 수 있는 명사의 단수 및 복수에 붙여 쓸 수 있다. 이 때 정관사가 가지는 뜻은 다양하다.

정관사를 붙이는 경우[+/-]

앞에서 이미 이야기한 것 또는 잘 알려진 것 앞에서
There are two cats. Which is yours? - The white (cat) is mine.
오직 하나인 것을 나타낼 때
The sun is centre of our planet system.

Seoul is the largest city in Korea.
바다, 강, 해협을 가르킬 때
the Atlantic (Ocean), the Pacific (Ocean), the Indian Ocean

the Black Sea, the Mediterranean (Sea), the Red Sea,

the (River) Amazon, the River Han, the (River) Mississippi, the Nile

the Channel, the Suez Canal
방향의 지역을 나타낼 때
the east of Korea, the south of the Korean Peninsula

the Far East (극동), the Middle East (중동)
동물, 식물의 이름을 일반적 또는 그 종류를 나타내는 뜻으로 쓸 때
the Siberian Tiger.
민족, 다시 말해 한 나라의 사람들을 나타낼 때
the Chinese, the Dutch, the English, the French, the German, the Korean, the Swiss
'성씨 + -s'의 꼴로서 가족을 나타낼 때

신문, 박물관, 미술관 따위의 이름 앞에

Everest, Halla, Mont Blanc
- 예외: 복수로 쓰이는 섬 이름, the Canary Islands, the Bahamas
- 반도는 대개 정관사를 붙여 쓴다, the Korean Peninsula
